Beauty and your reflection…Motivation Monday

February 16, 2015 by Shaylene King In: Body Image Tagged: beauty, body image, inner beauty, makeup, reflection, reflection in the mirror

It is so easy to look to our reflection and and compare what we see by what society tells us is beauty. When we focus on our physical beauty, we are helping only ourselves. But when we spend our time and focus on our inner beauty (our heart) through our attitude, behavior and actions, we have the ability to help anyone and everyone. What an impact we can make in the world with a beauty that will last longer than a pretty face. And our inner beauty will cost us nothing financially. It will never need makeup, botox or anti-aging…

55 Books Your Child Can Read About Being Bullied

January 28, 2015 by Shaylene King In: Bullying

Harper Collins Publishers has put together a great resource on bullying from their authors. I have personally read several of them, given some of them away and share often this link with teachers, students and friends who have issues or concerns with bullying. Most are fiction books. Some deal with bullying head on while others characters experience it. I love how students can relate to the issue through fictional characters. One of my favorites is the Guardian Herd series by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez and her newest series Riders of the Realm coming out May 1st. I love in the first…

As an educator and parent of two teenagers with smart phones,  I am acutely aware there are apps out there that are dangerous and easily accessible to them. It’s not that I  think the creators of these apps are purposely out to harm our children but  I realize any app can be dangerous in the wrong hands. One thing I was naive to early on was the idea that apps were only dangerous if kids interacted with a “predator.” But what I would soon realize when my daughter returns from a cheer team sleepover, horrified by what one of the girls…

You know you are a writer when…

July 17, 2014 by Shaylene King In: Writing Tagged: author, authors life, editing, writer's life, writing

You know you are a writer when you are,” in the zone,” your words easily flowing from your finger tips onto the page  and you have to stop. It’s not because you want to, but because  you have been writing for days and your neck and shoulders are screaming at you. They continue to burn with anger, punishing you for not giving them a break. You ignore them…you even take a pain pill to buy yourself some time,  but their assault is relentless and you have to wave the white flag of surrender. #amwriting #amediting #authorlife

Barbie vs Average 19 Year Old Teen, How Do They Measure Up?

July 8, 2013 by Shaylene King In: Body Image Tagged: Barbie, body image, CDC, Center for Disease Control, Demi Lavato, Girl Bullying, mean girls, Nicholay Lamm, normal, Scott Stump, teen girls, teens tweens, TODAY

The above picture is a  3-D model created using Photoshop and the Centers for Disease Control’s measurements of the average 19-year-old woman. What a fantastic  representation of what is real and normal for a teenage girl. I love the article by Scott Stump which I have included in the link below because he sheds light on an issue and topic which is a very real for every teenage girl…body image. I have mentored teen girls for almost 20 years now and the biggest struggle is body image. And it’s not only teen girls. I believe we as women in general struggle…
